How to use the dictionary

How are the results presented?

As shown in the image above, the following elements are presented in this order:

  • the searched word in English
  • its translation into Moroccan Arabic in Arabic script, in green
  • its translation into Moroccan Arabic in Latin script, in bold
  • in brackets, its word type (see below for the list of word types used on Dar Darija), in grey
  • in italics and green, the plural form of the word (see below for some of the plural codes)
  • below, other terms that may be used
  • then, an example of its use in Moroccan Arabic, first in Arabic script and then in Latin script
  • in italics, its translation into English
  • finally, regional variations are sometimes shown at the bottom of the page

List of word types used in this dictionary

  • nm: masculine noun
  • nf: feminine noun
  • npl: plural noun (mainly used in the plural)
  • adj: adjective
  • adv: adverb
  • prep: preposition
  • exp: expression (a word whose literal meaning differs but conveys the intended idea, a group of two or three words used to express that idea, or an onomatopoeia)
  • vb: verb
  • conj: conjunction
  • pron: pronoun

Codes for certain plural forms

Many plural forms are written out in full. However, the most common ones are indicated using these codes :

  • +at: add “at” to the end of the word to form the plural
  • +a: add only “a” to form the plural
  • -a: remove the final “a” to form the plural
  • +wat: for some words ending in a vowel, “at” cannot be added; “wat” is added instead
